Bo/arduino advanced light tracker.

Made a followup to my light tracker, except this one can go up and down. So it follows light in more directions than the other ones.

Made of some cheap plastic-foam, wont last forever but long enough for me to test it.

Program Code!

PS. If you got any questions etc, please take it in my forums post here.

Guide: How to make a 9g micro servo continuous

Posted by Stigern | Posted in Electronics, RC | Posted on 03-05-2009-05-2008

It’s always good to have servos that works like a geared motor. That also can go in both direction and speed is adjustable, it’s very handy in robotic project or general vehicles. The servo I’m using is a Mystery Micro Servo 9g SD90. But most of these small servos got the same internals so I guess you can use this on other servos.

1. Remove the stickers on both sides, and unscrew the four long screws that goes from the bottom to the top. One in each corner of the servo.

2. Gently lift off the top cover to uncover all the gears. Notice, it’s smart to remember the correct order of the gears, so that when you put them back you know what goes where. But I took a picture close to make it easier to remember where they all go. Use picture below for this purpose.

3. Remove all gears, no need to clean the grease off. Just put them in a box just for now.

4. Take the top gear and snip the little plastic bit off it, look at pictures below. This is the part that stop the servo from going more than 180 degrees.

5. Now we need to glue the potmeter, look at picture below. Just remove the plastic cap thats on the shaft of the potmeter to show it’s internals.

6. Attach the servo to the ardunio, using pin 9 as the signal. Use this program or just some other program that gives the servo 90 degrees. If the potmeter is centered the servo should stop the motor from turning, if it doesn’t try to turn the potmeter shaft one or the other way until it stops. You now got it centered so that 90 is stop, just add some glue to the internals of the potmeter to keep it locked. Before moving onto step 7 let the glue dry.

7. You now need to cut off the end of the potmeter shaft, this keeps the potmeter shaft from moving. Look at picture below for more info.

8. Now you only need to put it all back together. Just use the picture in step 2 for reference when adding all the gears.

There you are, now it should work like a continous servo. Any questions just leave a comment below.

Now, this is small. And so extremely cool :P

It’s around the same “class” as the 5#6, 5G6 series. Which makes it even more suitable for using indoors. The ufo 4 also got a update, the ufo 5. Which is just an updated version of the 4. But the 8 is a all new ufo in the collection.

Specs:

1). Main Rotor Dia. : 80mm
2). Overall Length: 230mm
3). Overall Width: 230mm
4). Main Motor : 0720RN
5). Battery: 3.7V 400mAh Li-Po
6). All-up Weight: 40g (Battery included)
7). Transmitter: WK-2401
8). Receiver: RX2418
9). Gyro: 3D Gyro

I’m just amazed. Wonder when they will move onto something smaller than the ufo8,5#6,4#6 etc.

Yes, it’s been some time since I posted something here. So here I go!

The RC-season is just starting, as the snow gently melts and then comes back again. It’s not letting go that easy. But I’m really hoping to get my FP2 outside someday to practice more, I bet my skills have dropped some during the winter time.

Also I found out that two of my batteries got weak, so weak that they can’t be used for anything. They just wont charge, and my lama barley lifts off the ground with them. One raiden battery and one extreme productions battery. They are now disposed, may their mAh rest in peace.

Anyhow I’ve ordered two new batteries from DX, and since they are so cheap with the combination of the dollar it’s no problem :)

I dunno if I forgot to mention about my Asus EEE, well it arrived 1-2 weeks after I ordered it. And I’ve been using it now for some months, and it’s great!

But now the Asus EEE 900 is getting close to release. 1024×600 would be lovely! But I got my old asus eee.

VB.NET —> C# and RC update.

It’s about time, lets leave VB behind!

I jumped over to C#, which is a .NET language just like VB.NET. And since god almighty Microsoft has these nice looking, somewhat fresh and delicious express editions. The choice was easy, and of course I’m used to Visual Studio from when using VB 6.0 and VB.net 2005 & 2008 express editions.

One of the big differences I noticed when starting with C# was the { and }, also the case sensitivity. Now when looking back at some VB code, I got problems reading it. It’s so messy :P

I’ve also bought a book from Uncle Sam, the Sams Teach yourself Visual C# in 24 hours. It makes the change easier, it covers the basics of the Visual Studio and the C# language. Which is just what I need!

So, over to the RC front. Theres not happening anything right now, since theres a cold winter going on. And almost bad weather everyday.

How to avoid customs/toll?

Posted by Stigern | Posted in RC, Stuff | Posted on 20-12-2007-05-2008

1

We all know when shopping from foreign countries, it’s a pain paying the custom fees. There are some ways to avoid the fees, at least in Norway it is. And now you get to know how to.

There is a “toll-free” limit in Norway and thats 200 nok, over 200 nok you need to pay extra. So there is one good way to solve this problem, at least the method I use the most. It also depends if the seller/shop will cooperate with you. As far as I’ve seen all HK-shops will do so, bending the law is better than getting a unhappy customer.

If you’re shopping on eBay or some other shop, there is always a note-field or some place to write a message to the seller when finishing you’re payment. And in that field I use to write the following:

“IMPORTANT: Please mark package as Gift, and lower the value to under 30$. And remove this message from the reciept”

What that does is, they mark the package as a Gift. There is a Gift limit, and it’s around 1000 nok as far as I know. So if the customs receive a package marked as a Gift, and it’s under 1000 nok it will in most cases pass right trough. This is not a Guarantee, the customs will in some cases open you’re shipment for inspection. Then they will find a receipt, who sends a Gift to someone with a receipt?

So therefore I get them to lower the value on the package to under 30$, in most cases they just look at the package value and since it’s lower than 200 nok they’ll just let it pass. But then again if they now check the contents of the package? Yes now we come to the last point, remove the message from the receipt. So they can’t find a message telling them to lower the value.

And that’s it. All of my packages with this message to the seller has been a success. Notice this, I wrote this guide with experience from the Norwegian customs.

P.S some shipping insurance is calculated from the value of the shipment, so if you’re package is lost…. but then again who often does that happen?

Happy shopping!
